How to Create a Solana Wallet (Phantom or Solflare) in 2026

Creating a Solana wallet is free and takes under 3 minutes. You need one before you can hold SOL, buy tokens, or create your own token on Launchify. This guide covers Phantom and Solflare on desktop and mobile, plus how to back up your seed phrase safely.

What is a Solana Wallet?

A Solana wallet is a piece of software that holds the cryptographic keys controlling a Solana account. It lets you receive SOL and SPL tokens, sign transactions, and interact with Solana applications like Launchify, Raydium, Jupiter, and Magic Eden.

Wallets are non-custodial - the company that makes the wallet never sees your password or seed phrase, and cannot freeze, move, or recover your funds. That is a feature, not a bug. It is also why backing up your seed phrase matters so much: if you lose it, no support team on earth can restore it.

Phantom vs Solflare - Which One Should You Pick?

Both are excellent, free, and non-custodial. The differences are small in 2026:

Recommendation for most readers: start with Phantom. It is what most Solana tutorials assume, the dApp ecosystem treats it as default, and the experience is friendlier for first-time crypto users.

Step 1 - Install Phantom (or Solflare)

  • Phantom (recommended): Go to phantom.app and click "Download". On desktop choose your browser; on mobile choose the App Store or Google Play badge.
  • Solflare: Go to solflare.com and click "Download".
Only install from the official site. Search engines occasionally surface phishing extensions with similar names. Bookmark phantom.app and solflare.com the first time and use those bookmarks afterwards.

Step 2 - Create a New Wallet

  1. 1
Open the walletAfter installing the browser extension or app, click its icon. You will see two options: "Create a new wallet" and "I already have a wallet". Click Create a new wallet.
  2. 2
Set a passwordThis password protects local access to the wallet on this device. It is not the seed phrase. Pick a strong one and store it in a password manager.
  3. 3
Write down your 12-word seed phraseThe wallet will display 12 random words. Write them down on paper, in order, exactly as shown. Do not screenshot, do not email yourself, do not paste them into a notes app that syncs to the cloud.
  4. 4
Confirm the seed phraseThe wallet will ask you to re-enter several of the words to confirm you wrote them down correctly.
  5. 5
DoneYou now have a Solana wallet. The address is shown at the top of the wallet UI - it starts with a random string of letters and numbers, around 32-44 characters long.

Step 3 - Back Up Your Seed Phrase

This is the single most important security step. Your seed phrase is the wallet. Anyone with the 12 words has full control. Lose them and you lose the wallet forever.

  • Paper backup: write the words on paper, store in a fireproof box or safe.
  • Metal backup (most durable): tools like Cryptosteel or Billfodl stamp the words into stainless steel. Fire, water, and time-resistant.
  • Split storage: some users store half the phrase in one location and half in another. Don't fragment it across people - one person should be able to reconstruct it.
  • Never type your seed phrase into a website. Legitimate wallets only ask for it once - during creation. If anything else ever asks for it, including a tool claiming to be Phantom support, it is a scam.

Step 4 - Fund Your Wallet with SOL

An empty wallet cannot do anything. To send, receive, or interact with Solana apps you need a small amount of SOL for network fees, and more SOL for whatever you intend to do (create a token on Launchify, buy a memecoin, mint an NFT).

Option A - Buy SOL on an exchange and send it

  1. 1
Buy SOL on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, or another major exchangeSign up, pass identity verification, deposit fiat, buy SOL.
  2. 2
Copy your Solana wallet addressIn Phantom or Solflare, tap the address at the top of the wallet UI - it copies to clipboard.
  3. 3
Withdraw SOL from the exchange to that addressChoose Solana network on the withdrawal screen - not Ethereum, not BNB. Paste the wallet address, enter the amount, confirm.
  4. 4
Wait for confirmationSolana confirms in under 30 seconds. The balance will appear in your wallet automatically.

Option B - Use the wallet's built-in onramp

Both Phantom and Solflare have a "Buy" button that lets you purchase SOL with a debit card via MoonPay, Coinbase Pay, or similar providers. This is the fastest option but fees are higher (typically 3-5%).

How much SOL should I start with? If you plan to create a token on Launchify, start with at least 0.20 SOL - that covers the base fee, one or two optional add-ons, and network transaction costs. If you also intend to add Raydium liquidity, allow more SOL on top.

Using Your Wallet on Mobile

Phantom and Solflare both ship excellent mobile apps that include an in-app browser. This is how you use Launchify and other Solana sites from your phone:

  1. 1
Open the wallet appTap Phantom or Solflare on your home screen.
  2. 2
Tap the browser tabThe bottom navigation has a Browser or Globe icon. Tap it.
  3. 3
Navigate to uselaunchify.comType or paste the URL. The site will detect that you are inside the wallet's browser and the Connect Wallet button will work automatically.

Security Tips for Solana Wallet Users

  • Never share your seed phrase. Not with support, not with friends, not with a smart contract, not with a "verification tool".
  • Bookmark the wallet sites and use the bookmarks. Phishing extensions and search ads occasionally impersonate Phantom or Solflare.
  • Review every transaction the wallet asks you to sign. Make sure the destination address, amount, and program match what you expect.
  • Consider a hardware wallet (Ledger) for amounts you cannot afford to lose. Phantom and Solflare both integrate with Ledger.
  • Use a separate "burner" wallet for risky activities (new memecoin trades, unknown dApps). Keep your main balance in a different wallet.
  • Disable browser-extension auto-locks only on trusted machines. The auto-lock means anyone borrowing your laptop cannot drain your wallet.

What You Can Do Once Your Wallet is Funded

  • Create your own Solana SPL token on Launchify in under 30 seconds.
  • Launch a memecoin with revoked authorities, ready for Raydium.
  • Add liquidity on Raydium to make your token buyable and tradeable.
  • Buy and sell SOL or SPL tokens via Jupiter, Raydium, or the wallet's built-in swap.
  • Stake SOL with a validator to earn yield (typically 6-8% annualised).
  • Mint and trade Solana NFTs on Magic Eden or Tensor.
